Vintage Vinyl Night at West Winery | March 2015

JP’s Corner Market and West Winery teamed up in March to put on an amazing fundraiser for Macon County Ministries Food Pantry. A crowd of around 100 people showed up for the event and they were able to donate $640 to the Macon County Ministries Food Pantry. Linda Truitt, the Coordinator for the Macon County Ministries Food Bank, said that each month they give away around $15,000 worth of food to people in Macon County.

The night consisted of a pork loin dinner, dips provided by JP’s corner market, various wines from West Winery, some Macon trivia and great music. Steve Blomberg, the DJ for the evening, played a wide variety of vintage vinyl records that attendees brought from home.

According to a 2011-13 study from the USDA, Missouri has an above average food insecurity rating which makes what the Food Bank does even more important. This rating looks at a variety of factors that affect food procurement and gives an understanding to the level of hunger in an area.

JP Hartung said the event was success and that they are looking to do similar events in the future to help support local organizations like the food pantry.

One particular piece of Macon trivia that stood out was a record from a band called Friar Tuck and the Merry Men from 1966. The band was fronted by Mike Marker and the song they recorded was titled “Peanut Butter”. The group was originally from Macon and actually recorded the song at a studio that used to exist in downtown Macon.
